H. STEVEN BERKOWITZ was admitted to the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Bars in 1982. He graduated from the University of Rochester with degrees in Political Science and Biology, and received his law degree from the Villanova University School of Law.
From December, 1982 until late 1992, Mr. Berkowitz was in private practice, first as an associate at Spitzer & Franklin, Brick, NJ, then as a partner in Ford & Berkowitz, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, then as a solo practitioner, and from 1987 through 1992 as a partner in Franklin & Berkowitz, in Brick, NJ. The general practice areas include serving as assistant municipal prosecutor in Jackson, NJ, personal injury litigation, real estate, municipal court matters, collections, wills, and zoning matters.
From 1992 to 1997 Mr. Berkowitz was a Supervising Assistant County Prosecutor in Ocean County, where he worked in the grand jury unit, and headed the Arson Unit and the Asset Forfeiture Unit.
In 1998 Mr. Berkowitz was appointed by the Township of Lakewood as the Lakewood Public Defender where he served from 1998 until 2009.
Since joining Pringle Quinn Anzano, P.C., in January of 1998, Mr. Berkowitz has been assigned to the Firm’s insurance fraud practice, with particular emphasis on complex claims involving staged accidents, medical provider fraud, and kickback and referral schemes involving runners, medical providers and attorneys.
Mr. Berkowitz has extensive experience in a broad range of insurance coverage issues, as well as all aspects of personal injury; including automobile, premises, dram shop, and products liability. Mr. Berkowitz has litigated wrongful death, and numerous PIP, UM/UIM and workers’ compensation claims. He has also litigated claims against public entities, defended automobile dealerships against Consumer Fraud suits, and arbitrated and litigated construction disputes. As a prosecutor, Mr. Berkowitz drafted guidelines for police departments for use in bad check and similar fraud investigations.
